Effective Ways to Stay Motivated to Exercise Regularly

It isn't always easy to stay motivated to work out. Every new year, we find ourselves making the same resolution of losing weight but the drive to do so quickly dissipates and we easily fall back into old eating habits while neglecting our workout routine.

We want to help you disrupt that cycle by offering some easy-to-follow guidelines. The next time you need some workout motivation, remember to refer to this guide to help you flourish in your fitness journey.

Set a Goal

When your mind is aware of what exactly you are exercising your body for, it helps give you the right motivation to keep going. Setting a goal with understanding and intention will help make the journey achievable.

The goals you define don't need to be overly complicated. Setting small, achievable fitness goals can help keep you motivated longer as you hit more checkpoints along your fitness journey. We recommend upping the challenge of your fitness goals as you become more confident and consistent with the program you choose.

Walking every day working your way up to 10,000 steps a day is a great place to start. Once this level has been reached, you can switch things up with bursts of jogging. You can then try increasing the amount of time each burst lasts each week.

Another fun challenge to try is the jump rope. Start with 500 jumps, adding 100 more each week and eventually working your way to 1500 jumps in a day. It's all about discovering what sparks joy for you and setting goals that fit your current fitness level.

Schedule a Regular Workout Time

Finding the time to work out can be challenging. Setting aside a dedicated time for exercising and adding it to your schedule is helpful. Schedule these sessions and commit to them as if they were your job. Find the right time that works for you and will keep you consistent, and be sure to disconnect from any possible distractors.

Make it Fun

One way to stay motivated to work out is to find exercises that you enjoy. If running on a treadmill or throwing weights around sounds like torture to you, don’t try forcing it. There are other modalities to reach your goal and exercise should be a reward, not a punishment.

Working out doesn't have to be boring; try making your workout session something you look forward to every day with some fun exercises. Experiment to see what clicks for you.

Enlist the Help of Your Friends or Family

Having the support of your friends or family can keep you motivated. Better yet, get them involved in working out. Invite them to join you for an outdoor run, or perhaps enlist the help of a friend to be your accountability buddy.

Be Flexible

At the beginning of a program, motivation is at its highest which can be good and bad. Know that it’s okay to take a day off if you’re feeling wiped or are too busy. What matters is that you get back on track as quickly as possible and that day off doesn’t turn into a week off.

Reward Yourself

Celebrate your recent weight loss with a new pair of jeans or maybe some new athletic apparel. Appreciate how far you've come in your journey, and recognize all the fantastic results you've had since you started.

Try a Group Fitness Class

Taking part in group fitness classes is another great way to stay motivated to exercise. You'll be surrounded by like-minded individuals and a fitness instructor who will help you push yourself further. This is another great time to invite friends or family to join you.
