What You Need To Know About Fibromyalgia

Have you been experiencing musculoskeletal pain throughout your body? Are you noticing that this pain accompanies mood, memory, and sleep problems? Unfortunately, you may be experiencing a condition known as fibromyalgia, characterized by widespread muscle pain and tenderness.

Healthcare professionals still do not know the exact reason why some people develop fibromyalgia, and treatments range from medication to counseling. If you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but still unsure about what the condition entails, read on to learn more.

Common causes of fibromyalgia

When it comes to pinpointing an exact cause of fibromyalgia, the research is still ongoing. Currently, there is no set list of causes that result in this condition. We know that women suffer from it more than men do, and that genetics can play a factor.

Additionally, repeated or sudden nerve stimulation has been shown to contribute to the onset of fibromyalgia. If you have been in a car accident, or just went through rigorous surgery, fibromyalgia may be a lagging side effect even after treatment is finished.

Psychological stress has also shown to be a factor in this condition. Oftentimes, stress levels can alter our physiological makeup and leave us with sore and tired muscles, fatigue, and headaches. This damaging effect from stress can trickle down to our nerve endings, causing them to become over-stimulated and triggering fibromyalgia.

Common symptoms of fibromyalgia

While the cause of fibromyalgia is still a bit unclear, fibromyalgia symptoms have been narrowed down to three primary ones. Widespread pain is the first, and many describe it as a constant, dull pain that lasts for a few months. The pain typically occurs throughout the body, above and below the waist, and on both sides of the body.

Cognitive difficulty is another symptom, commonly referred to as “fibro fog.” Many with the condition note how hard it is to pay attention, focus, and remember certain things. The reason for this symptom is unclear, but it is a common thread amongst those with the condition.

Fatigue is the third primary symptom of fibromyalgia and is a constant complaint in those with the condition. While some people are fatigued because the widespread pain prevents them from getting enough sleep, others awaken tired even after a full night’s rest. Restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea also accompany fibromyalgia and contribute to the fatigue many experience.

How upper cervical chiropractic care can help

If you suffer from fibromyalgia, then you have probably tried several treatments. While
fibromyalgia treatments typically include pain relievers or antidepressants, many have found that a more holistic approach is necessary to heal their bodies.

Upper cervical chiropractic care is a demonstrated treatment method for fibromyalgia. Although you may find this a bit surprising,
chiropractors have been trained in treating patients with fibromyalgia. These healthcare professionals have an intimate knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and can pinpoint your areas of more severe pain to alleviate your discomfort.

Typically, a misalignment in the spine can trigger a whole host of discomfort throughout your body, exacerbating your fibromyalgia. With a chiropractic adjustment, any misalignment will be corrected and most of your pain will likely diminish. However, since fibromyalgia is usually a chronic condition, it is best to schedule regular appointments with your chiropractor to ensure your body stays in alignment.
