How to Get the Most Out of Your Massage

You’ve read about the many benefits of massage therapy (such as stress relief, pain management, improved sleep, headache relief, etc.), and now you’ve booked your first appointment. Whether you’re looking to relax or recover, or a little bit of both, you’ll want to ensure you make the most of your massage therapy session.

The following is a list of ways to help you get the most out of your well-deserved massage.

Schedule Your Massage Strategically

Before scheduling your massage with a registered massage therapist, consider the timing of your appointment. If you’re looking to de-stress and relax, it might be more suitable for you to choose a later time in the day when you finish work and are ready to unwind. On the other hand, if a massage makes you feel energized and ready to concur the day, then a morning massage would be ideal.

Exercise Beforehand

Are you thinking of hitting the gym after your scheduled massage? You might want to reconsider. As tempting as it is to take advantage of your rested, pain-free muscles, you should continue to relax. Exercising immediately after a massage can cause muscle strain or injury. You might anticipate feeling energized after your message only to realize this is the ideal time to unwind. It is recommended that you wait at least 12 hours before exercise, but ideally 24 hours.

Shower Beforehand

To make the most of your massage shower beforehand. A hot shower will not only have you feeling fresh and clean, but it’s also a great way to prepare and begin to relax your body and mind. If you are nervous or tense, warm water is a great way to ease that tension and be ready for further solace once you visit the massage spa. You’ll also feel confident in knowing you smell and feel fresh.

Don’t Eat/Drink Beforehand

If you can, try to avoid eating or drinking directly before your massage. Receiving a massage will stimulate digestion, and your stomach might be nosey or sore. You also run the risk of interrupting your massage to run to the restroom (which is okay if you need to). Do not starve yourself, though. A light meal an hour to two before is fine. You’ll want to avoid going in hungry and feeling light-headed or unwell.

Be Honest & Open with Your Massage Therapist

If there’s one thing your registered massage therapist wants from you, it’s for you to be comfortable with being honest and open. You shouldn’t be afraid to speak up during your massage if something feels uncomfortable. Feel free to ask questions and let your massage therapist know when something hurts or doesn’t feel quite right. Your massage therapist won’t judge you based on your pain tolerance; they can simply adjust to your comfort level. Also, If there is a specific area that you feel needs more attention, let your therapist know so they can focus on your areas of need.
